Board games were a big part of my childhood...Everything from Checkers, Connect Four, Chutes & Ladders when I was very young, to Scattergories, Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit as I got older. I have very fond memories of Thanksgiving or Christmas get-togethers, followed by an Auntie or two and some cousins, along with Grandma and Mom and Dad and I huddled around the table in our little dining room whooping it up over some games.
The kids are now getting to an age where they are really into board games...and there are *so* many to choose from now! We have been playing games so frequently lately that the kids are really 'getting' it, and playing together when grown-ups aren't able to. It's so fun to see them connecting with each other (and friends, when we have guests) in this way.
Chess, anyone? The kids and I are learning how to play Chess together...I think it's fun for them to see me learning something new right along side them...and fun to beat me, too!
Uno has become a frequently played game at our house, and one of those games that the kids will just pick up and play together...
Here is Spider-dove playing a memory game that we made up ourselves:
The kids are always inspired to do yoga after a round of 'The Yoga Garden Game':
Alpha Aminals is definitely the kids' favorite game...and one of mine as well. It's neat because people of all ages can play it at different levels of 'challenge' all at the same time (*and* it's made of all recycled/recyclable materials - gotta love that!):
And here is a snapshot of the kids playing with the Kapla Blocks Grandpa sent them during the Winter Holy-days ~ not necessarily a board game, but something they are completely engrossed in for long stretches:
Yay for Play!

I highly recommend Mancala if you haven't experienced it already. A definately favourite in our house of board game adorees! We also are totally hooked on Memory, Kerplunk, Jenga and Snakes & Ladders. The adult folk in our world have recently taken to Monopoly (while I don't admire the premise) it brings back great childhood memories.
